Food figures prominently in 1 Corinthians. This should not come as a surprise, since food and related concerns (e.g., commensality) are predominant in many other NT texts. In addition, it was an important issue in the Jewish communities; so important, that many of the synagogue complexes included cooking and dining facilities. In some instances, the Jewish community gathered in a renovated house (i.e., house synagogue), in which case the facilities were already present. And in the nondomestic setting, facilities were sometimes introduced. Food and meals were also important concerns to the non-Jews in the Greco-Roman world.
